Paying bills can’t be avoided, but it can be easy and automated thanks to BillPay. Whether you’ve been using online banking for years or just signed up, let’s make sure you’re taking full advantage of this feature.

How does BillPay help?

How many times a year do you forget to send in your WiFi payment? Or have to go out of your way to drop off a check at city hall for your water or sewer services?

Scheduling payments through BillPay can help you avoid late fees and credit card processing fees, saving you a few bucks each month. Plus, think of all the time and energy saved when your bills are drafted instead of having to mail checks or log into multiple accounts.

Is BillPay setup different on the SouthState mobile app versus online banking?

Depending on your preference, you can set up BillPay on your phone or computer. There’s only a slight difference in getting started – where you log in.

To set up payments, follow the steps below:

  • Log in to online banking or the mobile app

  • Click “Transfer & Pay”, then “Pay Bills”

  • Click “Add Biller”

  • Search for biller – if the correct name doesn’t show up automatically, click “Add Biller” to bring up the full list of matches

  • Enter payment information and click “Add”

  • Confirm payment details and click “Pay"

If you need a guided tour of BillPay steps, click the “?” icon in the top right corner.

Can I pay an individual person with BillPay?

You may have a biller who works for themselves, like a caregiver or housekeeper. Though they are not a traditional company, you can set them up as a Biller by entering their account information. Choose Add Biller, type the person’s name and click Next, then the person tab to get started.

Please note that payments sent to an individual must go by check, not electronic payment.

How do I schedule repeating payments?

You may want to simplify recurring bills that are typically the same amount. BillPay allows you to set up multiple payments with Autopay.

Begin by selecting the biller, then “Add autopay” on the next screen. After following the prompts, you should see “Active” on the biller details page.

Find scheduled payments in the Recent Activity section.

Can I change a payment after it’s scheduled?

Life happens and you may need to adjust your monthly budget to compensate for an unexpected payment. Scheduled payments in BillPay can be edited by selecting the item and “Edit payment.”

You can change how much to pay, when to pay and which account to pay from. This option may be helpful if you want to increase or decrease monthly principal and interest payment on a loan.

What payments cannot be made through BillPay?

BillPay can streamline most of your household finances, but there are a few exceptions.

Tax payments or court-ordered payments are a common restriction you may encounter. BillPay cannot be used to send in property taxes or child support.

Other examples include payments related to gambling (sports betting, etc.), traveler’s checks, money orders and bitcoin transactions.

Please read the Terms and Conditions for the full list.

Can multiple people access one BillPay account?

For those splitting household bills or monitoring spending, BillPay isn’t limited to one account. Our Customer Care team can assist you with adding additional accounts to your BillPay profile.

How do I print payment information from my phone?

The Activity tab allows you to find information by date, biller and payment status. Once you’ve found the information needed, click “Apply,” then “Download.” You’ll receive a PDF summary that you can print via wireless printer or email to yourself to print later.

What are payment options in BillPay?

Payments are processed electronically or via check, depending on how the biller accepts payments. For companies that accept electronic payments, payments are processed in 1-2 two days. If they require a check, a check will be created and mailed on your behalf. Depending on where the check is being sent, it may take 3-5 days.

For check payments, either:

  •  the payment amount is debited from your account first and converted to a check or,

  •  a check is created for the payment amount and, once the biller receives and deposits the check, the amount is debited from your account.

What are payment cutoff times?

Payments being processed electronically or by check have a cutoff time of 10:00 PM EST. If you need to process a same-day electronic payment or next-day check, there are associated fees.

How do I know if a bill has been paid?

When setting up a Biller, you have the option to be emailed when the payment is scheduled, sent or both. You can update this option later if you wish to change email notifications.
